Deadmau5’s rise to fame has been rapid and intense all over the world, and it is no exception here in Vancouver. Earlier this year he sold out a show at the Commodore, and soon after Blueprint brought him back to the city and he swept a sold-out crowd of 2800 into the UBC Thunderbird Arena and off their feet. I don’t usually get to shoot shows this large, but I always find them pretty fascinating. The immense scale of the spectacle and the collective atmosphere developed by a few thousand people gets me psyched.
This photo essay in particular made me consider the different ways of representing large crowds. I tried to take some ideas from the fantastic Andreas Gursky show at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The representation of gathering, worship, and scale is something I want to keep working on and develop new approaches to. Also, hopefully these photos give a sense of the dichotomy at a show this large. The fan world, the Deadmau5 icon world, and the morphing, lively relationship between the two. I’m always interested in hearing critical feedback, so if you have a response please email me or sound off in the comments. enjoi!

Flying Lotus - Red Bull Music Academy, Canada Tour
Sorry for the lack of updates, currently documenting the RBMA FlyLo tour. It’s been amazing so far. We’ve torn through Victoria and Whistler and I’m right now sitting in the Vancouver Airport (yyyeeesss iinntteerrnneett) with My Man Henri who’s been killing it this trip.
We’re hitting Calgary tonight, then on subsequent nights, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and polishing it all off in Vancouver on Sunday. Photos to come soon, but for now you can check out a few shots from the first stop on Henri’s blog.

After a short rest and many 14-hour photoshop sessions later, I met the gang at the Vancouver airport and we made our way to Toronto. The ten finalists from each heat were flown in to Canada’s biggest city to battle for top spot at the Red Bull 3Style 2009 finals.
After 10 stops in 28 days, over 7,500 people had danced and listened to over 80 DJs do their thing in the hopes of becoming the most versatile DJ in Canada. Months of sweat, blood, and air-miles accumulated to this one night. Here’s the journal of what went down…

Red Bull 3Style 2009 - a DJ competition that swept across ten Canadian cities with eight competing DJs at each stop. Their aim was to mix at least three different genres into a 15 minute set, and spin they did as the winner of each heat was flown to compete at the finals in Toronto and play alongside the likes of A-Trak, Neil Armstrong, Jokers of the Scene, and Mat the Alien.
At the beginning of 2009, Red Bull approached me and asked if l wanted to document the entire series, coast to coast. Can’t say no to that…
So I packed my camera gear, named a suitcase Home, and embarked on a four-leg trip that started at home in Vancouver and took us to Winnipeg / Edmonton / Calgary - Kitchener / Toronto / Ottawa - Quebec / Halifax / Montreal - then Toronto again for the finals.
