Went for a ride with Harrison Boyce and Travis Collier around the Seawall path today. The blistering cold really got to our fingertips and toes but the scene was beautiful and it was fun regardless.

So slammed with work but I took a break today and played around in photoshop. One thing led to another and I’m delaying putting my clothes in the dryer to make GIFs out of pics from New York.

Before the Red Bull BC One contest took place, Red Bull got us to bring bboys into the New York subway system to take photos. It was a cool experience to shoot like this and I’m pretty amazed we didn’t get kicked out of any of the stations. Here are some shots of Lil Ceng from Germany, Flying Buddah from Russia, and Neguin from Brazil. Expect more photos from the trip soon!

What up! Long time no post sorry. I’ve been stressballs it’s been f’in busy. So I just finished shooting the Red Bull Street Style contest in Toronto and right now I’m in New York City for the first time ever *excite*. Am here to shoot a break dancing competition called Red Bull BC One. Haven’t had the chance to explore the city yet (am already quite in love tho), but I did shoot photos of some breakdancers doing crazy shit in a subway station. One of them flipped so high he almost took out a light. I’m not allowed to post any of those photos as of yet but when I can they will definitely be on this blog! Instead for now, here’s a self-portrait GIF I made in Toronto.

Here’s a video I put together today using clips filmed over the past couple weeks with my Canon sd780 compact camera.

In one of the clips you can see my wide angle lens when it literally sunk into an ice rink in Montréal. It was a job getting it out.

I don’t know how to upgrade this old version of wordpress because I’m an idiot with this sort of thing, so you’ll have to watch the video on vimeo or facebook. Sorree.

Interestingly enough, Andy Chung earlier today released a video of similar concept that was also filmed using the same camera. Not only that, but he filmed some of his bike clips at the same time as I was filming mine, we were just in different parts of the city. Neither of us knew we were gonna make these videos until after they were uploaded. Bizarre. nh.

So I finally learnt how to make gifs today. gifs are rad. For those interested, click here for a good tutorial if you use photoshop CS4 (starting from step 18).

Deadmau5’s rise to fame has been rapid and intense all over the world, and it is no exception here in Vancouver. Earlier this year he sold out a show at the Commodore, and soon after Blueprint brought him back to the city and he swept a sold-out crowd of 2800 into the UBC Thunderbird Arena and off their feet. I don’t usually get to shoot shows this large, but I always find them pretty fascinating. The immense scale of the spectacle and the collective atmosphere developed by a few thousand people gets me psyched.

This photo essay in particular made me consider the different ways of representing large crowds. I tried to take some ideas from the fantastic Andreas Gursky show at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The representation of gathering, worship, and scale is something I want to keep working on and develop new approaches to. Also, hopefully these photos give a sense of the dichotomy at a show this large. The fan world, the Deadmau5 icon world, and the morphing, lively relationship between the two. Two months ago, a video of Nosaj Thing’s visual collaboration with Julia Tsao and Adam Guzman tore across the internet blowing minds everywhere. (I watched it a few times a day at one point). After seeing it, Kenny Mac at Red Bull knew he had to act on an idea for a visual show that had been cooking in his brain for a while. Soon after - Red Bull Megahurtz was born.

October 1st saw the event play out at Studio Juste Pour Rire during the Pop Montreal music festival with Nosaj Thing and a stacked line-up of Canada’s finest talent - Megasoid, Grahmzilla, Neighbour, Jelo, Barletta, Hovatron, Lunice, and GreenMachine.

This photo series documents a video shoot the night before to the set-up at location and the event itself. My Man Henri said it best, describing (well, correctly predicting) it to be “a scintillating audio visual spectacle of lavish lights that would give Jerry Jones’ new Texas Stadium’s Jumbotron pixel envy.” The night was bonkers and everyone killed it, definitely a banger show.
